Commissions

I do paintings on commission. I’ll work with you to bring a particular scene to life, using photographs, written resources, and your verbal descriptions.

Is there a particular train or locomotive type that really grabs your attention? Do you have an aircraft that you would like to depict in flight? Perhaps you never got a good photo of your first airplane. Or maybe there’s a particular mission you or a family member flew while in the military that you’d like to commemorate. I can do it.

A close-up painting of a black Southern Railways GP38-2 locomotive crossing a concrete arch bridgeThis painting was commissioned by a very kind gentleman as a gift for his friend John Morgan. The GP38-2 is John’s favorite locomotive and the Big Black River Bridge is his favorite bridge. I was asked to combine them in one image, and to put John in the engineer’s seat. Look closely and you’ll see a tiny little portrait of him. Never having seen this bridge in Mississippi in person, I worked from photos I found online and took advice from friends who live in the area. I sent the client several initial sketches to make sure I was on the the track he wanted, and shipped him the finished and framed artwork a few months later.

Painting Hit My Smoke depicting an F-4E Phantom jet diving in to attack a target in a mountainous region of Laos My painting Hit My Smoke was done on commission for a group of Tiger FAC fast forward air controllers. They flew highly dangerous solo missions during the Vietnam War, so there are virtually no known photographs of their planes in flight, and none during an actual attack. I created the painting using photos of F-4 Phantoms and F-105 Thunderchiefs, photos of typical Laos “karst” landscapes, and descriptions provided by the veteran pilot in charge of the project. We worked remotely from each other, using phone calls and email.

Painting Seven-Zero-Four-Charlie-Charlie Over the Golden Gate depicting a Beechcraft Baron flying above the Golden Gate BridgeI did Seven-Zero-Four-Charlie-Charlie Over the Golden Gate using a photo of the bridge that Charlie-Charlie’s owner took himself, and other photos of the plane.

While I specialize in aircraft, I also paint trains, boats, and  cars.
